IMSD Eligibility

1) Requirements of undergraduate pre-IMSD scholars:

a) Member of a group underrepresented (UR)* in the sciences

b) MUST be interested in attaining a PhD in a biomedical or behavioral field

c) Be a 1st or 2nd year student

b) Enroll in Bio 200 Intro to Research (2 hrs. credit) or SIRE research partners

c) Enroll/Attend IBS500 Special Topics in Biosciences

d) Completed an Individual Development Plan (www.myidp.org)

e) Engaged in research or looking for opportunity to participate in research (must be identified prior to applying as an IMSD Undergraduate Scholar)

f) Must be in and maintain good academic standing

2) Requirements of undergraduate IMSD scholars:

a) Member of a group underrepresented (UR)* in the sciences

b) MUST be interested in attaining a PhD in a biomedical or behavioral field

c) Be a 3rd or 4th year student

c) Must be in and maintain good academic standing

d) QTM 100 or other approved statistics course

e) Must obtain CITI certification, EHSO training

f) Enrolled in IBS500 Special Topics in Biosciences

g) Engage in research 10-15 h/wk academic year 40 hours per week summer

h) Attend Summer Undergraduate Research at Emory (SURE) for two years or optional off campus research experience

i) Present a poster at our STEM symposium and at SACNAS, ABRCMS or a traditional scientific meeting

j) Write an honors thesis or participate in research for credit once IMSD funding ends

k) Apply to a minimum of three graduate programs

3) Requirements of IMSD Community Member:

a) Current Emory/Oxford Undergraduate or Emory Post-baccalaureate scholar

b) Must be in and maintain good academic standing

c) Does NOT meet IMSD Criteria based on i) career goals and/or ii) not a member of a NIH-defined underrepresented group in science (therefore cannot be paid by the program) or is a 4th year undergraduate student or post-bac

d) Engaged in research or looking for opportunity to participate in research

e) Attend/Enroll in IBS500 Special Topics in Biosciences

*UR by NIH definition is any students in biomedical, clinical, behavioral, or natural sciences that is disabilities; or from a social, cultural, economic, or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds. 

IMSD Application Requirements

To complete the application, you will need:

  1. Your mentor's contact info if you already have an agreement with this research mentor, or you will need to identify four faculty members with research programs that are interesting to you.
  2. A letter of recommendation from an Emory faculty mentor which attests to the suitability of the student for the IMSD program and gives support to the student on both academic and professional development. Letters must be emailed directly from faculty mentor or recommender to http://imsd@emory.edu. It is your responsibility to provide the email and due date to your recommender.
  3. An essay of 500 words or less that describes your research interests and how they relate to your academic and career pursuits of a Ph.D. 
  4. An essay of 500 words or less that describes your reasons for applying to THIS program. 
  5. Transcript (unofficial transcripts are ok) 

IMSD Application

The IMSD is currently accepting applications for the 2019-20 program year.
