IMSD Eligibility

  • Pre-IMSD scholars:
    1. Apply during first year
    2. Meets IMSD criteria*
    3. Show evidence of commitment to research

      Ex. Enrolled in or member of:

      -Intro to Research in your discipline (e.g. NBB299, BIO200)

      -Stem Partners

      -Stem Pathways

    4. Engaged in research or looking for an opportunity to participate in research

    5. Must be in and maintain good academic standing

 

  • IMSD Undergraduate Scholars:
    1. Apply during the second year, appointed during the third and fourth year
    2. Meets IMSD criteria*
    3. Must be in and maintain good academic standing
    4. Engage in research 10-15 h/wk during the academic year
    5. Attend Summer Undergraduate Research at Emory (SURE) for two years or optional off-campus research experience
    6. Apply to SACNAS, ABRCMS or another scientific meeting
    7. Apply to a minimum of three doctoral programs
  • IMSD Undergraduate Associate Scholars:
    1. Current Emory/Oxford Undergraduate
    2. Must be in and maintain good academic standing
    3. This category is intended for students who do not meet IMSD Criteria based on racial/ethnic group.
    4. Engaged in research or looking for an opportunity to participate in research

*IMSD criteria: To be eligible for funding, undergraduate applicants must 1) be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident from a group underrepresented (UR) in science, a first-generation college student, and/or from a disadvantaged background, and 2) be interested in a Ph.D. granting program in a behavioral or biomedical field. IMSD Application Requirements

To complete the application, you will need:

  1. Your mentor's contact info if you already have an agreement with this research mentor, or you will need to identify four faculty members with research programs that are interesting to you.
  2. A letter of recommendation from an Emory faculty mentor which attests to the suitability of the student for the IMSD program and gives support to the student on both academic and professional development. Letters must be emailed directly from faculty mentor or recommender to IMSDprogram@emory.edu. It is your responsibility to provide the email and due date to your recommender.
  3. An essay of 500 words or less that describes your research interests and how they relate to your academic and career pursuits of a Ph.D. 
  4. An essay of 500 words or less that describes your reasons for applying to THIS program. 
  5. Transcript (unofficial transcripts are ok)

2022-2023 IMSD Undergraduate Application

 

Deadlines:

The deadline to apply is December 9, 2022 at 11:59pm. Students selected as IMSD Scholars will start the program in June 2023. Students will be notified if selected for an interview by early January.
